(2012)
Handsomely shot and atmospheric, but never sufficiently distinct from any other well-made ghost story.
Part of the problem might be Radcliffe, who doesn't embarrass himself but doesn't particularly impress either. All those Harry Potter expressions are present, just with a bit more make-up to make him look wearied and nearly old enough to be a dad. There's something about his vocal delivery too, that just doesn't command attention.
Ciaran Hinds adds much-needed weight; he's just so damn watchable. Janet McTeer is excellent in a small role as his spooked wife. The centrepiece night in the haunted house didn't really grab me, but the third act attempts to end the haunting were gripping. I did wonder why, given the threat to their little ones, all the parents in the village didn't just up and leave decades ago.
