I have serviced no kings, yet I wager that I can shave a cheek with ten times more dexterity than any street mountebank.
(2007)
As a piece of filmmaking, this is probably the best work Tim Burton has done; he clearly identifies completely with the milieu and makes sure it reeks of fantasy Victoriana in the set design. He also has a real recognition of how to get the best from the story.
Likewise, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter relish their roles (and are well-supported by Alan Rickman and Sasha Baron Cohen).
So it's a shame the songs are so utterly forgettable and pedestrian. There’s a superb film there if only he'd forgotten about the songs. And while I'm not a gore fiend, it's nice to see some Hammer Horror-coloured blood on screen again.
