(2007)
Not quite the masterpiece that has been suggested, but it’s certainly made me rethink the middling, overrated status I had previously awarded Paul Thomas Anderson.
Daniel Day Lewis' performance is expectedly riveting, the compositions are masterful and the soundtrack gives the film a constant sense of atmospheric foreboding.
I think it missteps somewhat with Paul Dano's character which comes across as a heavy-handed caricature. At points he makes the proceedings feel cartoonish at the expense of emphasising the struggle between the two power-obsessed men. Then, given the nutty finale, maybe that's the intention.
