(2007)
Does Robert Rodriguez get a hard-on for hot chicks losing limbs? After Carla Gugino in Sin City and Rose McGowan in this it seems highly probable. I've read all the interviews where he and Tarantino relate how they thought their Grindhouse idea was hot shit, and how they thought the marketing let them down. But here's a thought; they failed because they're turds.
Rodriguez is clearly going for a more out-and-out tongue-in-cheek tone than Tarantino, but he has neither the wit nor the intelligence to pull it off. In amongst the constant grue, I was mostly bored. Even the parade of slumming it actors (nice to see Michael Biehn getting work again) actors failed to interest me.
Back in the '80s Joe Dante and John Landis were able to affectionately take genres they liked and riff off them with smarts aplenty. Rodriguez is just a hack without even Tarantino's (now dormant) flair for dialogue.
