(2008)
As visual masterpiece, as Fincher’s films always are (his commentary tracks are the best bar Gilliam's too).
The film is much more than the sum of Eric Roth's script, which is a little schematic perhaps. And the performances, from Pitt and Blanchett to small roles for Jared Harris, Jason Flemyng and Elias Koteas, are compelling throughout.
Fincher's anti-sentimentality makes it in some ways the antithesis of Roth's previous Forrest Gump, while in terms of visual palette he reminds you more of Jeunet and Caro than his prior work.
Effects-wise, it's only the young Pitt at the end that has the feel of plastic people (perhaps because they're trying to make him Pitt circa Thelma & Louise, whereas elsewhere they're projecting).
