(1978)
With his early films, the Joe Dante DVD commentary is sometimes more entertaining than the actual film (Dante really found his feet with his next picture IMO), but it’s always a pleasure to see supporting roles given to regulars Dick Miller and a suitably crazed Kevin McCarthy.
Being a John Sayles script there is plenty of political commentary amidst the chewings, and some nice narrative twists (the heroes are responsible for unleashing the whole sequence of events in the film, whilst the solution is to "pollute them to death").
Nice anecdote about how the Texas State Guard was resourced for the film by showing them fake script pages in which the army were shown as the heroes, not the villains of the piece.
