(2008)
You can't accuse Soderbergh of the biopic-by-numbers approach that Milk takes, but in this case perhaps some grasp of what the focus is would have helped. The director has said he had no great interest in Guevera, and coming away from this it is clear that he is - as ever – a technically incredibly proficient filmmaker in his adaptability to realise projects of any given subject or genre.
But he seems to have lost any feel for what sort of films he wants to make or why, other than viewing them clinically in terms of what stylistic choices suit the medium. This has been a problem since he had his second flush of success at the turn of the decade and, whilst his films always have something to offer, that nothing of late has been more than solid is indicative of his detachment from his material.
